Here’s a list of road closures, parking restrictions and more for Pope Francis’s visit
The list of road closures and parking restrictions keeps growing as the District prepares for Pope Francis’s arrival Sept. 22.
Transportation
officials say commuters and visitors should anticipate long delays,
road closures, detours, and parking restrictions in areas around the
Vatican Embassy in Northwest, the White House, the Cathedral of St.
Matthew the Apostle, Conference of Catholic Bishops, Basilica of the
National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, St. John Paul II Seminary,
St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, the U.S. Capitol, and other locations.
(Visitors
to all events should be prepared to go through security screenings and
the Secret Service has released a list of prohibited items, including
large backpacks, selfie sticks, balloons, bicycles, and drones. You
must know by now that weapons of any kind, including toy guns, are
forbidden at these events, right? Here’s a full list of prohibited items).
Officials announced earlier this week that Metro will run near rush hour service
throughout the day to accommodate the additional crowds. Some station
entrances may be temporarily closed for security reasons, Metro said.
People attending Wednesday’s Mass at the Basilica should also expect
large crowds at the Brookland Metro station. Metro will provide shuttle
bus service from Fort Totten and Rhode Island Avenue stations
Metrobus
will run a regular weekday schedule, but as many as 70 routes could be
impacted by road closures. Metro is expected to release more details in
coming days.
City and federal officials have announced some major road closures.

APOSTOLIC NUNCIATURE OF THE HOLY SEE – VATICAN EMBASSY
The
following parking restriction will be implemented beginning 10 a.m.
Monday, Sept. 21, and remain in effect until approximately 4 p.m.
Thursday, Sept. 24:
34th Street NW (east curb) between Massachusetts Avenue NW and Fulton Street NW
The
following parking restriction will be implemented beginning midnight
Tuesday, Sept, 22, and remain in effect until approximately 4 p.m.

- 34th Street NW between Massachusetts Avenue NW and Garfield Street NW
- Fulton Street NW between 34th Place and Normanstone Drive NW
The
following roads will be closed to all vehicular traffic beginning 9
a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22, through approximately 4 p.m. on Thursday, Sept.
24:
- 34th Street NW between Massachusetts Avenue NW and Garfield Street NW
- Fulton Street NW between 34th Place NW and Normanstone Drive NW
***MASSACHUSETTS
AVENUE NW between Observatory Circle South and 34th Place NW will be
closed to all northbound traffic. Southbound traffic will be permitted
between 34th Street NW and Waterside Drive NW. All northbound truck
traffic will be diverted onto Q Street NW at Sheridan Circle NW. All
other northbound traffic will be diverted onto Rock Creek Parkway at
Waterside Drive NW. All southbound truck traffic will be diverted east
on Garfield Street NW or continue south on Wisconsin Avenue.
Massachusetts Avenue NW will be closed to all traffic intermittently***
